8 Hour Review – White Knight Chronicles II

As always, with the first of a new type of article, I’d like to give an explanation of what this is. Some games have way more than the normal ’2 to 3 days of playing and I’m done’ to them. Games like open world adventure games, most jrpgs, etc. can have 60-100+ hours in a single playthrough, and often have some either endless or replayability element to them. And I don’t want to wait for weeks and weeks to get reviews to you, but I also don’t want to review a game before I finish. So I’ve come to a compromise, for games that are exceptionally long – games that I foresee myself taking weeks to finish – I will be doing these ’8 hour reviews’. These are brief partial reviews of my impression of the game after a day or 2 of playing – approximately 8 hours. And then, when I eventually do finish the game, then I’ll write a full review and crosslink the two articles to make it easy to find in case anyone wants to compare.

The first game to get one of these segments will be White Knight Chronicles II – the sequel to Level-5′s grind-heavy JRPG that I did a review of back in February, and that came out a year earlier. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine (PS3)

Relic’s new third person shooter set in the Warhammer 40K Universe is out – Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. In Space Marine you play as Captain Titus of the Ultramarines who has been deployed to a remote forge world named Graia that has been invaded by the Orks. His mission, initially, is to prevent a giant mech from falling into the hands of the Orks. Things rapidly change from there, and Titus soon gets caught up in a war far different from what he initially expected. [Read more...]

Currently Playing – September

So now that we’re out of our summer game lull, let’s take a look at what there is to do right now.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine – Just finished this one last week, will be having a review up soon I hope.

Plants Vs Zombies - Spent a little time killing some zombies with flower power as it came free with Playstation Plus this past week!

Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten – Woo for long JRPGs! Crawling my way through this fabulously long Strategy JRPG.

White Knight Chronicles 2 – Another long JRPG! Started working on this one as well. Loving it so far.

Record of Agarest War Zero – Yes, I am still eking my way through the perfect playthrough on this one. Unfortunately it’s been put on the side while I play the new games out there – but if you like strategy rpgs and want something to eat away your hours on… this might be a good choice for the next gaming lull! ;)

Starcraft 2 – When I need some downtime from all the new games, I like to sit down and play a few SC2 ladder games.

Diablo 3 – Beta hasn’t started quite yet for us normal folks, but it looks fantastic and I hope I can get a chance to play it once it’s available.

Final Fantasy IV – The Complete Collection – This is basically a staple on the list. Eking out hours of gameplay here and there between other things, but still enjoying it thoroughly.

Diablo 3 Skill Calculator

Just a little heads up that I wanted to post here. Blizzard has finally posted a full skill calculator for the upcoming Diablo 3. If you’re looking to plan out your various character options, head on over to: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/barbarian - it defaults to the barbarian but just use the buttons on the side to choose your class of choice.

I’m personally looking forward to giving a build something like http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#ZValdT!Ube!YZZYcZ a try. But the calculator definitely shows the sheer quantity of options available for each class.

Here’s hoping this is a sign that the closed beta, and eventually release, are imminent, eh?

Enjoy!

New Link

Just wanted to acknowledge that I’ve added a new link to my ‘favourite websites’ section – for a Starcraft 2 webcaster who also does a fair bit of coverage of other titles including Diablo 3 and Path of Exile, among some other titles: Force Strategy Gaming.

The person who runs the website is very good at giving the game commentaries as well as has the right type of voice to be interesting to lsiten to as a webcaster. If you have any interest in SC2 or D3 I strongly recommend giving his site a look.
